Web   Tools
Ektron eMPower
New With eMPower, Ektron puts Web authoring tools and a content-management application in the hands of the people in your company who provide the content--the editorial producers or the marketing folks, for instance. eMPower offers content developers an easy-to-use word processor-like interface. Therefore, while your IT staffers maintain administrative control of the site, they don't have to be burdened with routine HTML coding and page creation. Key components of eMPower include document management to keep track of different versions of a page or site, a personalized work area to manage and edit the documents you're working on, and a virtual staging server for approving and publishing pages.

Available: Now. Starts at $2,999 per URL and includes a 10-user license.

RAID   Controller
Mylex Corp. AcceleRAID 170LP
New If your server closet is like most, it's anything but roomy. Such tight quarters call for high-density, low-profile servers--and not much else. Mylex Corp. has the ideal RAID controller for such devices. The company's AcceleRAID 170LP can be used in a 2U server without a riser card or in a 1U-high server with a riser card. Geared to ISPs and e-business applications, the 170LP features a single Ultra 160 SCSI LVD channel and supports data transfer rates of 160 MB per second. The RAID controller is PCI hot-pluggable and provides full RAID Level 0, 1, 0+1, 3, 5, 10, 30, 50 and JBOD configuration capabilities. Configuration and management are handled through Mylex's RAID EzAssist utility and its Global Array Manager, respectively.

Available: Later this summer. $495.

Internet   Access
eDevice Technology SmartStack
New eDevice Technology's SmartStack software lets you easily and inexpensively connect any piece of equipment to the Internet. It uses a single DSP (digital signal processor) to initiate the modem software and the Internet protocols stack software (PPP, TCP/IP, SMTP, POP3, FTP, HTTP) at the same time. Devices with SmartStack can send and receive e-mail, transfer files and perform remote-command and -control functions. According to eDevice, SmartStack can be implemented in a vending machine, for example, to notify a supplier when stock is running low. Other applications include having SmartStack monitor a home security or sprinkler system. Because SmartStack is inexpensive to enable--as low-cost as a few dollars per unit--it's very flexible, the company says.

Available: Now Pricing is set per customer.

Infrastructure
Lightwave Communications ConsoleServer 800
New Lightwave Communications' ConsoleServer 800 offers an alternative to terminal servers. It provides centralized management of serial-command console ports through direct network access, a local terminal or an optional modem connection. Six simultaneously connected users can access up to eight devices. The attached devices may be a mix of workstations, servers, local or wide area components and network management systems. System administration can be performed locally or carried out via the ConsoleServer 800's remote dial-up and telnet access. The ConsoleServer 800 has a 64-KB FIFO buffer per device port. The buffers hold the last 80 to 100 screens of data for each connected device, providing a limited audit trail in the event of a problem.

Available: Now Starts at $2,495; optional modem card, $395.
