We tested these products on our live network at Syracuse University. The network consists of about 10,000 nodes, but we focused on the 1,000 or so that comprise the backbone and central core. We added simulated WAN links using Shunra Software's The Cloud emulation software and threw in simulated SNMP MIB devices using Mimic from Gambit Communications. The Cloud let us replicate WAN impairments; Mimic gave us a predictable target for SNMP performance.
Most of the products were run on Microsoft Windows NT using dual 600-MHz processors with 512 MB of RAM. The exceptions were RiverSoft's OpenRiver, which was loaded on a Sun Microsystems Ultra 10 with 512 MB of RAM, and Peregrine's InfraTools Network Discovery, which ran on a 500-MHz Intel box running a version of Linux.
