E-business is alive and getting a much-needed shot in the arm, with new software and gadgets making virtual commerce a reality. Improved offerings from IBM and Interlink Electronics add to the security and ease of doing business online.

IBM WebSphere Everyplace Access 4.1
>> IBM says its new WebSphere Everyplace Access 4.1 lets users access data on the network from any device or appliance, including mobile phones and PDAs. Everyplace Access can accept input and output from voice, text or both. Like the rest of IBM's WebSphere family of tools, Everyplace Access uses standards such as SynchML, WAP and LDAP. Everyplace Access also offers a choice of connectivity modes for devices--disconnected, always on and intermittently connected. Add-ons are available to allow for application development using IBM's Eclipse framework standard, available to the open-source community. IBM says it plans to enhance this software later in the year by adding popular functions such as calendaring and notification as well as device management. Available: Later this month. $85,000. Interlink Electronics ePad-ink Electronic Signature Pad
>> Silicon Valley has seen companies come and go, but Interlink Electronics has continued to make the cut by improving its interface products. Its latest e-transactions offering, ePad-ink Electronic Signature Pad, uses handwriting biometrics to ensure the security and validity of electronic signatures. Designed for business, government and retail needs, ePad-ink is positioned to decrease the costs associated with processing documents that previously required signatures on paper. The electronic signature appears on the ePad-ink in the context of the document being signed, binding the signature

to that item. $269. Interlink Electronics, (800) 340-1331, (805) 484-8855. www.epadlink.com, www.interlinkelectronics.com

Red Gate Software SQL Compare
>> Red Gate Software, of Cambridge, England, has improved its SQL Compare software in version 2.0.1, adding full support for Microsoft SQL 2000, including schema-bound objects, indexed views and instead of triggers. This software, designed to compare and synchronize SQL 7 and SQL 2000 database structure and contents, uses proprietary code to calculate the order of database items to be evaluated, cutting down on compare time. $195.
