My Professional Mission:

Unix Advocate
Although Unix never ``made it'' on the desktop, IMHO, it's still the best darn operating system for getting things done. Of course, it's the OS of technical choice for most servers and database engines, in spite of the Microsoft NT juggernaut.
Online Editor
I've been with UnixWorld magazine since it's inception almost 20 years ago. I'm still trying to keep the spirit alive.
Web Programmer
I've done all the programming for the UnixWorld Online site and most of the programming for the LAN Times site, our sister publication. I've started with server-side programming (CGI in Perl) and have ventured into writing Java applets and JavaScript for dynamic HTML pages.

Some non-professional interests include:

Outdoor Sports:

Sea Kayaking
Been paddling almost three years (Labor Day anniversary date). I finally bought my own boat last Spring 97 (an Arluk III). I store it at Sea Trek (Sausalito, CA) and paddle with my regular paddle buddy (Karen) to various destinations, including: Horseshoe Cove, Kirby Cove, Point Bonita lighthouse, Paradise Cove, Ayala Cove or go around Angel Island, and sometimes Alcatraz as well.
Last November took my first expedition outside the Bay Area: I circumnavigated Isla Espirtu Santo near La Paz in the Sea of Cortez -- definitely paddling in Paradise.

Bicycling
I do at least one long road ride a week with Bob, my on-road bicycling buddy and sometimes one off-road ride with Janine, my other bike buddy.
Hiking
I enjoy hikes with many friends, like ``adventure-buddy'' Jayah, and folks at Sierra Club hikes and backpack trips.
Skiing
Plan to do some cross-country this year with Karen, my kayak buddy.
Not that active because the water is just too darn cold up here in Northern California.

Indoor Activities

Science Fiction
Taping SF from TV. Best, consistent sources for me are the ``Sci-Fi'' channel, a local PBS station (KTEH San Jose, which devotes late Sunday night to SF), UPN, TNT, FOX, and even the major networks are getting the idea. Currently, I'm archiving (generally dub three episodes onto one T-160 tape, sans commercials or pledge breaks, personal-use only).
Currently, I'm archiving ST:Voyager, Babylon 5, ST:DS9, Millennium, Earth: Final Conflict, FX: The Series (almost SF), Highlander, and, of course, the X-Files.

Non-computer books I'm reading

I'm reading another 1940's SF anthology...so what else is new?
