THOMAS M. YAGER

Here's a link to the unabridged version of this biography.

I wear a lot of hats. Right now, I'm a freelance technical writer, video producer, software developer and multimedia producer. I sometimes consult, but only rarely do I have the time.

My first paying job as a teenager was writing business software for Radio Shack Model I computers. I got thrown out of my high school computer science course for correcting my teacher (``RAM'' meant ``read-access memory'' to him). Since then, I taught myself everything I needed to know, about computers and otherwise. I was doing so well as a consultant, I simply kept working after I graduated; I skipped college. For respite, I took detours into some non-careers including top 40 radio deejay, carnival sideshow barker/magician and a week-long stint at Burger King. I always came back to computers.

Presently, I spend my days working for Matrox's Video Products Group as an evangelist. After I punch my card there, I write for whomever will publish me. In the past, that's been BYTE, UNIX Review, Computer Shopper, Open Computing and Windows magazines, among others. Today, I write for UnixWorld Online, reprising my ``PC-UNIX Connection'' column and may do an occasional product review.

I do the research for my writing in a private lab I built while working for BYTE Magazine. I've had two books published and sold three video training packages (one of which is already being distributed).

Among my non-profit ventures are photography, music and trips to the Fort Worth Zoo.
